Van Gogh and Japan…

Although he has never been in Japan Van Gogh had a large collection of Japanese woodblock prints. He pinned them on the walls in his work space to inspire him in his creativity. The result is amazing.

He started to make reproductions in order to understand Japanese art and artists. That way he developed a Japanese way of watching the world which had a big influence in his later work. Last year the Van Gogh museum in the Netherlands devoted a special exhibition to this topic. You still can watch the video on it on their site.

In June of this year you can watch the whole documentary ‘Van Gogh & Japan’ in the movie theatre in Belgium. On 20th and 23th of June Kinepolis Gent shows the documentary on big screen. Must see!
